Roll up doors
Rolling Steel Doors, can be suited, for all types of applications. They carry an advantage of minimal overhead obstruction.
For conversation, let's term Rolling Steel Door, as an RSD. An RSD, would be an Industrial door, that rolls a steel curtain around a barrel.
Termed as a sheet door, some RSDs use a continuos sheet of metal. The sheet is corrugated, to add strength, while remaining flexible. The sides of the curtain, usually use banding (typically nylon, or rubber) fastened along the edges, to minimize friction, and noise. The curtain travels inside steel guides, and rolls up around a barrel. These would be medium duty RSDs. The barrels are normally sheet metal tubes, reinforced with circular hubs, centered at axis, with bushings, or bearings, to rotate around a hollow shaft. Within the hubs, a spring, or multiple springs, will be used, to counter-balance the weight of the curtain, throughout it's door travel. Regular maintenance will ensure intact bushings, and tight saddles. Special lubricant can be used for the guides, the use of grease is a disaster, and should not be used.
Slat doors, offer a more heavy duty application of RSDs. The curtain consist of interlocking slat, that can fold around a Heavy Duty, steel barrel. The slat uses end-locks, in common applications, to prevent shifting. Most slat doors use head plates, that support the barrel, and allow a fasten point, for a hood. The hood, which improves cosmetics, and helps contain exterior dust, actually serves a more crucial purpose, of bracing the head plates. Over time, a spring can break within the barrel. Rather than replacing the door altogether, which may otherwise be intact, the barrel can be removed, rebuilt, and re-installed. When using a gearhead electric operator, a broken spring may not be apparent, as the operator uses significant gear reduction to operate the door. This will create a dangerous condition, as the weight of the curtain is no longer balanced with a spring, and is held only by the drive chain, which can come off the sprocket as a result of the extra weight.
Both types of roll up doors can be insulated. There's a wide choice of weather sealing options. Both can be repaired, in most circumstances, after getting crunched with a fork lift.
